Diamonds and Moissanite appear identical. Both are clear stones with a brilliant fire. One is very much cheaper than the other.
Which should you choose?
One look at the prices and moissanite seems like the better buy.
Then again, diamonds are way more expensive because diamonds are natural gemstones that are rare and are mined from the earth itself. Diamonds are precious. The moissanite you see in stores is actually an artificial gemstone. Often used as diamond substitute as they look very much alike. Diamonds are rare and precious while more moissanite can be made any time to meet any demand. Diamonds are an investment. Moissanite is well... decorative.
As diamond prices tend to be really high, especially for the larger, whiter diamonds, for glamorous jewelry that features large "diamonds", to be worn at a function, go for moissanite.
Huge real diamonds set in jewelry would be way too expensive to wear safely, in public without bodyguards following you around. In fact, high society ladies who own such covetable real diamond jewelry would lock the diamonds in the safe and wear moissanite replicas or other diamond replicas of the real jewelry in public.
If the jewelry in question is an engagement ring, please go for the real thing. She is not going to be impressed if that 3 carat diamond ring is actually moissanite and not diamonds. She might even be humiliated if she tells her friends about it and later finds that it is not a real diamond. Better get her a smaller diamond you can afford than a huge moissanite, for important jewelry like these.
How about that diamond stud earrings?
Or that diamond tennis bracelet you intend to wear all the time.
Should you go for moissanite?
That depends on your budget and your taste. Moissanite is more brilliant than diamond but the light tends to be harsh. Some people think it looks fake and cheap and has a disco light effect. Others love the extra brilliance.
If you like the extra brilliance and are on a relatively tight budget but want something that dazzles and really catches the eye, moissanite is your rock.
If you also want your jewelry to double up as an investment in case of hard times, then the answer is to stick to diamonds all the way.
If you prefer diamonds, choose your diamond carefully. Especially if you want your diamonds because of their investment value. Look at the 4 Cs. Carat, Color, Clarity and Cut. A good quality diamond, preferably round as round diamonds are easier to resell, with a clarity of VS2 or better and a color H or better would be best.

More commentsMy husband and I were looking at rings today to replace my wedding set that I can no longer wear. The setting I chose can be done in diamonds or moissanite. The moissanite option being much cheaper. I was torn as to what to do and this will be the last ring I buy. After reading this article I am sure I will be doing the moissanite version. Thanks!!!
My wife and I have had our Moissanite engagement ring for 4 years now and it looks as good as the day we bought it. Fantastic! Never buy a diamond.
you need to do better research. Diamonds are not rare, they are everywhere. They are not a good investment because the mark up on diamonds is rediculously high and you will never get back what you paid for it. The dabeers marketing team only made the public believe it was an investment jewel and the good ol USA buyer bought into it, but then had to change their marketing to diamonds are forever....why do you think they did that? I will leave that to you to research, beware it will upset you when you find out the truth, all that money you spent could of gone towards something like a home which is a real investment.
Just bought a beautiful 3 stone moissanite pendent for my wife. It was a toss up between a smaller diamond set or a more stunning mos. Pendent. U can guess which one I bought...Happy v-day babe!
My fiance and I picked out a beautiful, bezel-set engagement ring with moissanite as the stone. He'd preferred a diamond originally, but I convinced him that moissanite was a choice that I was very comfortable with - I thought it was pretty, there wasn't an history of exploitation behind it (like diamonds), and I loved the idea (as I told him) of "wearing a star on my finger." I tell people it is a moissanite - no need to let them guess, plus - how can people be educated about this lovely stone if we aren't open about it? Moissanite is moissanite - it shouldn't be held up against a diamond for comparison. It isn't a "fake" diamond. It is moissanite. As to diamonds being rare gems - that is a myth that has been perpetuated by the DeBeers diamond cartel, but that issue has been addressed in these comments more than a few times. One thing to note, though, with all lab-created jewels, is that lab-creation eliminates not only the need for mining and tearing up the earth, but it also eliminates a lot of waste as there is better control over the quality of the gemstone. And goodness knows that we, as a planet, are already wasteful enough. So, I'm happy with my greener, cleaner, moissanite engagement ring. And so is my fiance. He came around when he realized how much money we saved by buying moissanite....
Buying a diamond is most definitely NOT an investment. The only way to get your money back from a diamond is to take it to a pawn shop. Unless we're talking about the Hope diamond, the majority of diamonds are purchased only to impress other people. Good luck trying to get the money you invested out of it in the future.
Fake people wear fake stuff give fake love. The true is couldn't afford real diamond.
Diamonds as an investment. I don't think so... has this person ever tried to resale a diamond? You can't even get 1/3 of the price you paid. I'm don't care if you want to by a diamond or moissanite but don't give be bull $%&*@$%& about a diamond being an investment.
On what planet are diamonds an investment? You will NEVER be able to sell it for what you paid, simply because it was overpriced to begin with. De Beers started the whole campaign of "a diamond is forever" as a marketing campagin. Seems about right for something that they want you to think will be more valuable at some point. Real estate is an investment. Also, to the people saying fake people fake gems etc., for some people it is NOT about the price of some inanimate object on your finger, it is about the future of the couple, and the happiness of their marriage. Not everyone is materialistic or so naive about diamonds.
I LOVE IT. MY 1.3 CT MOISSANITE IS SO BRILLIANT UNDER THE LIGHTS AT WORK, THE HOME DEPOT, WALMART, ETC. I COULD GO ON. GO MOISSANITE GO. AND IT IS A REAL STONE FROM THE HEAVENS, NOT TEARING UP THE EARTH, HAVING CHILDREN ARMS CUT OFF FROM CONFLICT. DIAMONDS ARE A WASTE. THE EXTRA MONEY WE HAD BOUGHT MY MAN A TV.
